The market for natural cosmetics and skin care products has grown almost exponentially over the last few decades. If you were to peruse the cosmetics section of a department store, you would see products that are labeled "hypoallergenic." However, how does the hypoallergenic nature of natural cosmetic bases enhance the product to begin with?

Let’s begin with what the meaning of the term "hypoallergenic.” This suggests that the products concerned are less likely to cause allergic reactions in comparison to other cosmetic products. Furthermore, it implies that the product is safer to use and is more gentle than products that cannot be identified as such.

It is noteworthy, however, that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have federal standards or regulations that govern the use of the term "hypoallergenic”. In simple, the FDA stresses that the decision to label a product in such a manner lies solely at the discretion of the manufacturer itself. In addition, the term may be applied without proof that it causes fewer allergens. So in essence, natural cosmetic bases that are labeled as "hypoallergenic," at least theoretically have a lesser likelihood of causing adverse skin reactions (allergic) in comparison to similar products in the market.

When labeling of hypoallergenic products first became popular in the mid 1970s, the FDA issued a regulation governing its use. This regulation involved the requirement to conduct scientific research and proper proof that this was accurate. However, the FDA’s efforts were thwarted as this regulation was subsequently declared invalid by the U.S. court system. Consequently, manufacturers were given extra leeway in the application of the term as a selling point for both chemical and natural cosmetic bases. Even though this was not the purpose of this ruling, it was an unfortunate consequence.

The FDA office of Cosmetics and Colors Fact Sheet highlights the fact that most cosmetic products that are fashioned for the same result use very similar ingredients. Increased awareness and the need for corporate social responsibility has led manufacturers to refrain from using harsh ingredients, which were used frequently in the cosmetic manufacturing process a few decades ago.

In conclusion, it can be argued that the term “hypoallergenic” has a diminishing meaning in the world of natural cosmetic bases, on the basis that products are becoming increasingly safer. It is impossible to guarantee that a product would not cause an allergic reaction. However, the fact that the FDA requires cosmetic manufacturers to list the ingredients used in the manufacturing process on product labels allows consumers to make a prudent decision. Nevertheless, the role that the term plays in natural cosmetic bases is immense and undeniable.
