| Do your children know how to maintain dental hygiene ? Lubbock |
Do your children know how to maintain dental hygiene?
It is extremely important to teach dental hygiene to your children when they are very young. By learning to look after their teeth at an early age children will develop a good habit which will help them to maintain their teeth, which in turn will be helpful to keep good health throughout their entire life.
Parents must ensure that the children follow a daily routine as regards their teeth, until the children are old enough to look after their teeth on their own. Parents must brush the teeth of young kids and try to make it an interesting habit. Children will normally be attracted towards fun electric tooth brushes and therefore using them may be helpful.
Day care helpers and pre school teachers too can help children to maintain dental hygiene by encouraging brushing their teeth during the time the children are under their care and also showing them the proper way to brush the teeth. They can make it a time of fun with activities children enjoy such as coloring pages, puzzles and games combined with brushing charts and pictures of dental experiments.
Children should be taught to develop good oral habits from an early age. They should not be allowed to go to bed with a bottle of milk or sugary liquids, as the sugar remaining in the mouth for a long time will cause rapid decomposition of the teeth. Acids too cause dental erosion. In order to avoid oral diseases the consumption of sugar and acids should be reduced as much as possible. Parents should also try to stop children from sucking fingers as this will lead to formation of uneven teeth and infection of gums.
As a rule children should brush their teeth twice a day with a small toothbrush with very soft bristles and floss at least once a day. Sweet drinks should be avoided as far as possible. If they take sweet drinks they should be given to drink some water, as the sugar left in the mouth will cause tooth decay and also help in the formation of cavities.
A dentist should take care of the teeth of a child from the age of one year. Regular visits to the dentist are essential for proper care of the teeth. A dentist will be able identify oral diseases, as they arise and give the proper treatment before it is too late.
