An Interview with Dr. Stephen Kavka on Tummy Tuck

Dr. Stephen Kavka is a plastic surgeon and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tummy Tuck.

Q. What is a Tummy Tuck?

A. A tummy tuck is an abdominoplasty, an operation in which excess abdominal skin is removed; the extent of the operation is variable depending on the individual patient's needs.

Q. What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

A. The benefit is a better abdominal contour.

Q. Who is an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck?

A. The ideal candidate is the person who is at their ideal weight, but has excess abdominal skin due to either pregnancy or marked weight loss.

Q. How is a tummy tuck performed?

A. The operation is done in hospital under general anesthesia.  A long, low transverse incision is made across the abdomen, the skin and fat is raised up, pulled tight and trimmed off.

Q. Are there risks and complications to a tummy tuck?

A. Certain risks are common to any operation, such as infection, bleeding, and poor healing.  Specific risks of this operation are poor healing, prominent scars, and malposition of the umbelicus.

Q. What should one expect after the operation?

A. One should expect a better abdominal contour.  This is not an operation to lose weight.

Q. How much does a tummy tuck cost?

A. My charge for a full abdominoplasty is $4000.
This does not include hospital and anesthesia charges.
