An Interview with Dr. Rachel Talis on Root Canal Treatment

Dr. Rachel Talis is a dentist and  has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canal Treatment.

Q. What is root canal treatment? And what does treatment involve?

A.  Root canals usually require one to two visits. Dentist or Endodontist will numb the area around the affected tooth and access opening will be created (drilled ) to reach  the pulp area either through the top or the back of the tooth. The actual root canals are measured after some of the pulp has been removed. This is done so that the dentist can clean the entire canal, and enough of the filling material will be used to completely fill the canal. Measuring is done with either x-rays or electronic imaging devices.
After all of the diseased pulp in the tooth is removed, canal is cleaned out with an antiseptic solution, dried and then filled with gutta percha, a flexible plastic material. After that a temporary filling is placed to close the access opening  that was created in the beginning of the procedure. A permanent filling and a crown will be placed  after there has been no sign of infection.

Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A. Signs of needing endodontic treatment:
Severe pain upon chewing or application of pressure
Prolonged sensitivity/pain to heat or cold temperatures (after the hot or cold has been removed)
Discoloration (a darkening) of the tooth
Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums
A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums

Q. Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?

A. Pain pills and antibiotics are not a substitute for a root canal treatment. Pain medication and antibiotics will help to relieve and control symptoms temporarily.

Q. How to contact Dr. Talis if we have further questions?
