Grow Into Your Own Niche Learning To Make Wire Art Jewelry ~ Lisa Van Herik

New Mom 101: Grow Into Your Own Niche With Wire Art Jewelry

I was forty when my first child arrived, having worked in both the corporate and social services industries post college. All of that’s to say that the shift from “professional woman” to “new Mom” was a major shift in my life. In anticipation of that shift, I’d been working as a commercial artist in my free time the year before. I worked for manufacturer’s of art supplies, writing how-to articles and crafting all manner of useful objects out of raw art materials. While I did everything from tables to jewelry, jewelry struck closest to home.

We’d also just moved out of state when the baby arrived and I knew that I’d need some means of getting to meet new people. So I got a babysitter and signed up for a Jewelry Making 101 metalsmithing class. While I did get to meet new people, I was not a successful metalsmith. I was a bit of a klutz with sawing metal sheet, to say the least. I was however, drawn to woven wire jewelry and fell in love with working with wire. It turned out to be the blessing of a lifetime.

I raised my two kids as I grew as an art wire jeweler. Every night for more years than I care to count, I looked forward to putting the kids to bed and then working on my wire jewelry. Like I was in training: practice, practice, practice.

While I did complete my metalsmith training, I focused on creating wire techniques, which eventually led to writing my first self published book, Make Wire Beads, now an enduring classic. Needing to publicize the book, I also started my first website and publishing company, Beadifferent Press. That was twelve years ago.

Making the transition from working woman to full time Mom can be a tough transition no matter how much you wanted your child. Finding a small niche, a hobby or even starting a new, part-time career, can most definitely help make that transition easier. Grow yourself as you help your kids grow.

If you’re a bizymom interested in learning to make wire art jewelry, go to www.beadifferent.com.
