| How to prepare your child for the dentist Los Angeles |
Regardless of age, a visit to the dentist isn’t a day any child looks forward to! It becomes a scary event mainly because they are not aware what is going to take place. Children very often cry during their first visit, especially when the dentist inserts various instruments into their mouth. It is usually recommended that your child’s first dentist trip must be on their first birthday.
If it’s your child’s first visit to the dentist here are some great tips to make the dentist visit fun and exciting:
1. Call prior to the appointment date and find out everything that will be done that day. You will then be prepared to answer any questions your child may have, and help make him or her ready for the visit.
2. Avoid taking your child to the dentist during naptimes. The best time is in the mornings, when they are fresh.
3. Get excited together. Tell your child about the dentist trip and talk about what will happen that day. You can even practice the visit by playing dentist. Tell your child to open his or her mouth while you search for bunnies inside! Another great activity is to create a sensory box. You can use an old shoebox and place various items that your child may see at the dentist’s office. For example, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, mouth wash and anything else you can find. Pick up each item and explain why it is used.
4. Buy something new – something special for the dentist visit. You can either buy your child new clothes to wear, an accessory, or you can allow him or her to take their favorite toy along with them on the trip. This will comfort them during any examinations or treatments done.
5. Read stories! This is a great way to prepare your child. Read to them an exciting story about a visit to a dentist. Make sure the book has illustrative pictures of dental instruments so that your child gets used to seeing the instruments. You can even talk about how the dentist will be dressed and how the office will look like.
6. Sign songs or rhymes! While in the waiting room, try distracting them by singing their favorite songs or rhymes.
7. After the visit congratulate him or her for good behavior. Tell them how proud you are, and how clean their teeth look.
These are only a few suggestions on how to prepare your child for the dentist visit. Use them to kick start your own techniques to make the visit a fun learning experience for your child.
