| Dr. Tammy R. Burrell is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT).
Q. What is Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)?
A. CRT = Corneal Refractive therapy = The perfect alternative to LASIK. Special contacts are worn only at night which fully corrects your vision during the day. The best part is that it works for KIDS! Think of CRT for the eyes as braces are for the teeth. Many of us are born with corneas (the clear outer most skin layer of the eye) that are too steep causing nearsightedness or causing astigmatism. Special contact lenses are placed on the eyes at night that reshape the cornea to counteract the blur caused by nearsightedness (myopia) and/or small amounts of astigmatism.
Q. Are Corneal Reshaping Treatment and Orthokeratology the same?
A. Orthokeratology is actually the umbrella term to describe the use of special contact lenses to reshape the cornea. CRT is a term coined by Paragon (the makers of CRT lenses) that use the latest in technology to streamline the process for better and more predictable results.
Q. How safe is CRT?
A. There is a small risk involved when any contact lens is worn. It is not expected that CRT lenses will provide a risk that is greater than other contact lenses. There were no serious adverse events reported by an FDA clinical study.
Q. Is CRT permanent?
A. No. It’s temporary. If you stop wearing the lenses regularly while you sleep, your vision will return to its original state in as little as 72 hours.
Q. How can we contact Dr. Burrell if we have further questions?
