An Interview with Dr. Edward Love on Breast Lifting.

Dr. Edward Love is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Lifting.

Q.    What is Breast Lifting?

A.    A breast lift, or mastopexy, procedure performed to raise and reshape the breast. Also, it can help reduce the size of the areola and restore a firmer, perkier breast. Women who would like to increase the size of their breasts as well as restore a firm, more upright breast may need a breast augmentation in combination with a breast lift. Scarring for a mastopexy usually is around the nipple and underneath the breast. There may be a scar from the nipple to the bottom of the breast to create an anchor like incision.

Q.    How is breast lift surgery done?

A.    There are several different types of breast lifts (mastopexy).  For patients with very little drooping and minimal volume a breast implant can be used to give size and shape with minimal cuts just around the nipple to raise the nipple in correct position.
The first type of Lift a crescent shape cut is made around the top of the nipple to raise the nipple approximately 1-2cm.
The second type of Lift actually makes an incision all the way around the nipple to lift the nipple 2-3cm.
For women who have more droop to the breast the third type of Lift is a considered a full mastopexy that involves an incision that looks like an anchor.  The incision is placed around the nipple, down from the nipple to the bottom of the breast, and underneath the breast. This is probably the most commonly used Breast Lift.
Whether to use an implant or which type of Breast Lift you should have, would need to be discussed with your physician.

Q.    What is the recovery period like?

A.    Usual recovery is 5-7 days.   If a breast augmentation is performed at the same time you may need additional 7-10 days.  Everyone is different in the recovery process some bounce right back while others may take a little longer.

Q.    Are there risks and complications to a breast lift surgery?

A.    General surgery risks including bleeding, infection, and standard anesthesia risks apply to a breast lift.  Other risks include nipple numbness, scarring, and uneven breasts.  The risk for numbness of the nipple is about 4%.  However, more women state that they have hyper-sensation for a few weeks after surgery.

Q.    How long do the results last?

A.    Many different factors go into how long a Lift will last.  The type of skin a patient has, the type of lift that is performed, and whether an implant is used or not.  Normally a breast implant will help maintain fullness and shape of the Breast Lift for a longer period of time.

Q.    How much does breast lift surgery cost?

A.   $. 5,300 to 9,000 depending on whether you do a straight breast lift or a lift with breast augmentation.  This price includes the physician fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, implant fee, and pathology fee.

Q.    What are some of the most common benefits of breast lift surgery?

A.    A breast lift gives a woman a more youthful, perky breast.  Your breast is lifted off your abdominal wall and has more fullness at the top of your breast.
