Q. What is tooth whitening?
A. Tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure whereby teeth are bleached to remove pigments that have accumulated in the enamel. At first, teeth appear ultra-white due to the dehydration effect of the bleach on teeth.
Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?
A. Every person will see an improvement in whiteness/brightness after bleaching but results vary.
In general, people who have never bleached before can expect more dramatic results, and yellow teeth whiten better than grey teeth.
Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?
A. Pregnant women should not whiten their teeth.
Crowns/veneers/fillings in the front teeth do not bleach and may need replacement after whitening of the natural teeth.
All patients should be examined by a dentist prior to whitening.
Q. What does tooth whitening involve and how long does it take?
A. Today there are safe options available to brighten your smile. All bleaching methods remove stains that are embedded in the enamel. Your dentist can provide superior whitening compared with products purchased at the drugstore. At Aldershot Dental Care we offer 2 options:
1. Custom trays for home use. We make trays that are molded to fit your teeth and you fill them with a supplied paste. You wear the trays 1-2 hours daily or to sleep overnight, for 10-14 days.
2. ZOOM! Whitening offers you a white bright smile in just one dental visit. We coat your teeth with a paste and then use a specialized lamp to activate the paste. With this method we also fabricate custom trays for you so that you can achieve even whiter teeth, or maintain your new bright smile over time.
Smoking and staining foods such as coffee, tea, red wine and blueberries will cause a faster relapse of your results. Most people like to "touch up" their teeth 1-3 years after whitening. The custom trays provided with both methods allow you to conveniently re-whiten your smile in just 2-3 applications.
Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?
A. The fee for the home kit and trays is $200.00 and refills of bleach only cost about $15.00.
The fee for in-office ZOOM! with home trays is $500.00 and refills of bleach only cost about $15.00.
Q. What are the side effects?
A. Both ZOOM! and home trays can cause temporary (reversible) tooth sensitivity.
