An Interview with Dr. Gary Moore on Root Canal Treatment.

Dr. Gary Moore is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors  have about Root Canal Treatment.

Q.    What is root canal treatment and what does treatment involve?

A.    In the simplest terms, it removes the infected nerve of a tooth.  Without going into "technical jargon", imagine that you have a canal or tunnel inside the center of a tooth.  That tunnel is full of blood vessels and nerve tissue.  Once it becomes infected or traumatized, the blood vessels and nerve tissue are removed, allowing the tooth to remain

Q.    What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A.    Symptoms involve pain to Hot, cold and when pressure is applied to the tooth.  Sometimes the patient has no symptoms and an x ray will reveal an abcess on the root end of the tooth.

Q.    Are pain pills and antibiotics an acceptable substitute for root canal?

A.    Antibiotics and pain pills are sometimes used to treat an infected tooth, but  ultimately do not take care of the problem, as they are designed to help with the symptoms only.

Q.    Are there alternative treatments for root canal?

A.    Alternative treatment is extraction (removal) of the tooth, with replacement using an implant, fixed or removable bridge.

Q.    How much will the procedure cost?

A.    Costs varies depending on the number of canals (tunnels) in the tooth.  Rough estimates are from $350-$1000 for the root canal.

Q.    Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?

A.    After a root canal, the tooth will need to have a crown (cap) to cover the tooth and restore the tooth back to normal.

Q. How to contact Dr. Moore if we have further questions?
