An Interview with Dr. Miles Madison on Dental Implants
Dr. Miles Madison is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are small titaium fixtures that replace the root structure of teeth. They are revolutionary in that they allow us to replace lost teeth in a whole new way and without causing damage to other teeth. Dental implants have been around for more that 40 years and have a very successful track record.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. Dental implants offer several benefits:
• They are stand alone restorations, meaning that we do not have to cut or damage other teeth to replace missing teeth.
• They offer bone stimulation just like natural teeth do, so the jaw bone in the area of the implant does not lose its shape (shrink) over time.
• They are long lasting. When dental implants are taken care of (by brushing and flossing regularly) they last a lifetime.
• They provide anchorage for dentures: dental implants are a great way to provide anchors for loose dentures.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. When properly placed and cared for dental implants can last a lifetime.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants are made of a bio-compatible metal called Titanium. Titanium is non-reactive, and very body friendly. Titanium is the same material that is used for artificial joints, and knees etc.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Any one who has lost a tooth can be a potential candidate. There must be adequate jaw bone present so that the implant can have a solid base. Patients must also be in good general health. It is rarely that we cannot place a dental implant for a patient who is interested in the procedure.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. The area that is receiving the implant is completely numbed first, then a small incision is made in the gumline to expose the jaw bone. Then a small channel is created in the bone to place the implant. The implant and the bone then form a firm bond. Even though it may sound like a grueling procedure, dental implants are very easy to place and most of my patients have minimal to no pain after the procedure.
Q. How long does it take?
A. To place a single implant we require about a 1 hour appointment. Then there are typically 2 follow up visits scheduled 1 week and then 6 weeks following the initial appointment. The follow ups are short visits that take about 15 minutes each and we check the implant to make sure it is healing well. Depending on the situation an implant can get the final crown as early as 6 weeks after the procedure is done. In certain cases the crown can be delivered immediately, but it is not recommended for most people.
Q. How to contact Dr. Madison if we have further questions?
