An Interview with Dr. Pablo Foncea on Teeth Whitening.

Dr. Pablo Foncea is a dentist  who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Teeth Whitening.

Q. What is tooth whitening?

A. Simply put, it’s the process of removing colored stains and pigments from the tooth by using some form of peroxide- similar to bleaching a shirt.  There are 2 main types- one is the in-office procedure and other is the take home procedure.  In our office we often combine the 2 to give our patients the best results.

Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?

A. Almost everybody can benefit from teeth whitening.

Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?

A. Women who are pregnant or nursing shouldn’t whiten.  Also, people who already have a smile full of crowns, the porcelain won’t change, so often they whiten the other teeth, and then change the crowns to match the brighter whiter shade.

Q. What does tooth whitening involve?

A. In office is very easy, we let the patient watch a movie and we do all the work. In that appointment we will take to molds of the teeth to make custom trays for the take home material.  While the patient is here we place the concentrated whitening solution several times to really get a jump on the whitening process.

Q. How long does this take?

A. Our in office usually takes just under 2 hours, about as long as a movie. The take home tray appt usually takes about 15 minutes, and then you whiten at home for at least a week.

Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?

A. Whitening can run from $300 to $1000.  Most of our clients needs are met with treatments between $500 and $700.  Once a patient whitens to the color they like it requires very little effort to keep it bright and healthy.

Q. What are the side effects?

A. In general short-term sensitivity can be a side effect. Some feel sensitive for up to 24 hours but usually Advil or Tylenol takes care of the discomfort.

Q. How to contact Dr. Foncea if we have further questions?
