An Interview with Dr. Taran Bhatia-Mehrotra on Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Dr. Taran Bhatia-Mehrotra  is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Wisdom Tooth Extractions.

Q. How do I know if I have wisdom teeth?

A. Wisdom teeth are the third set of permanent molars that erupt the furthest back in the mouth. Not everyone’s wisdom teeth are visible as they can be impacted. This means they stay underneath the gum tissue embedded in the jaw bone. X-rays are required to see if a person has all their wisdom teeth.

Q. How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

A. Wisdom teeth that are visible can be removed with specialized instruments that loosen the teeth from the jaw bone. Impacted teeth require an incision in the gum tissue around the tooth and they also may require removal of some of the bone covering the wisdom tooth.

Healing after the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth, versus a non-impacted wisdom tooth is generally very similar. The only difference is that sutures are placed after the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth.

Q. Are all wisdom teeth problematical?

A. Not all wisdom teeth cause problems. Most people don’t have room for this third set of molars in their mouth and they can feel pressure and discomfort as these teeth try to erupt. Also, some wisdom teeth are very difficult reach with a toothbrush and get cavities very easily making it necessary for their removal.

Q. If my wisdom teeth need to be removed, who will do it?

A. As a general rule, if your wisdom teeth are visible in your mouth and not impacted, then a general dentist in our practice will remove them. If your wisdom teeth are not visible and impacted, then we will refer you to an oral surgeon for their removal.

Q. What do I have to do to prepare for surgery?

A. There is nothing in particular that you have to do to prepare for surgery. However, if you are nervous and require nitrous oxide for the appointment, then we ask that you refrain from eating any food for two hours prior to the surgery to avoid an upset stomach. Also, you may want to buy soft foods or soups to eat while you are recovering from the procedure. We ask that you bring in a list of medications that you are currently taking.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. The cost varies depending upon simple or surgical extraction.

Q. How long will it take?

A. Removal of the wisdom teeth can take as little as ten minutes or as much as an hour.

Q. How to contact Dr. Mehrotra if we have further questions?
