An Interview with Dr. Bradley Bishop on Porcelain Veneers
Dr. Bradley Bishop is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Cosmetic procedures such as veneers are an easy and effective way to enhance your smile and your appearance. Veneers are thin but durable shells made of porcelain that are affixed directly to your teeth to close gaps, or to cover stained or misshapen teeth. To place porcelain veneers, your bite may need to be balanced. Once the balancing is complete, a thin layer of tooth enamel will be removed to prepare your tooth for the veneer. The color, shape and size of the tooth are then carefully matched and sculpted.
Once bonded to the tooth, veneers are difficult to remove so they are meticulously evaluated to ensure that the fit and appearance is exactly right.
Q. How long do dental veneers last?
A. Veneers last five to twenty years with appropriate dental care and oral hygiene.
Q. Do dental veneers require special care?
A. As with any other dental restoration a veneer requires careful oral hygiene for longevity. Veneers should also be protected with a nightguard during sleep.
Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?
A. Treatment options are always specific to the individual seeking treatment. Alternatives to veneers may include bleaching or orthodontic therapy (braces). In some situations a veneer is not appropriate and a crown may be used to change the shape and colour of a tooth.
Q. Do veneers look natural?
A. The materials and techniques used today to fabricate veneers produce a very natural and durable appearance.
Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?
A. Veneers do not protect teeth from decay. Teeth with veneers must be cared for by regular home oral hygiene and professional cleaning.
Q. How much does a veneer cost?
A. A veneer may cost between $900-$2500.
