An Interview with Dr. Sharnell Muir on Dental Implants

Dr. Sharnell Muir is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q. What are dental implants?

A. Dental Implants are made of titanium, allowing for optimum integration with the bone and tissue, are used to replace missing teeth, a man-made root, so to speak.

Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?

A. They are highly successful, they replace missing teeth providing better esthetics and function.

Q. How long does an implant last?

A. As with natural teeth , as long as they are maintained and cleaned properly, in a hygiene program, they should last many years.

Q. What are implants made of?

A. Titanium

Q. Who is a candidate for implants?

A. Anyone with healthy tissues. It is recommended smokers to stop smoking for 3 months before having implants placed. Diabetics must be under control, some osteoporitic medications result in a patient not being a candidate.

Q. How are dental implants placed?

A. The procedure is like a regular dental visit, they are placed here in the office.

Q. How long does it take?

A. It depends on how many are placed at a time, usually 30 to 40 minutes. Then healing time is usually 3 -4 months, and a crown can be secured to the top of the implant with a special type of screw.
