Your guide to Healthy Teeth for children
Having healthy teeth is an important aspect of children’s general health. Having accurate knowledge of the specifics of caring for children’s teeth is an essential part for parents. The following few paragraphs will help parents to get an accurate idea of how to care for their children’s teeth from the day that little tooth starts to appear.
Appearing of baby teeth
Also known as primary teeth, baby teeth normally start to appear when your child is around 6 months old. But in some children, baby teeth could appear in nearly 3 months or it may get late up to a year.
When your little one turns 3 years old, he should be having all the 20 primary teeth. But, in this instance too, the time taken for all the teeth to appear may vary from child to child.
When your child turns five or six years old, then his baby teeth will start to fall so that the primary teeth may come up.
Tips for good dental health for children
Up to a year old
During this time, you can start to care for your toddler’s dental area by wiping his gums with a spongy, hygienic and moist cloth, two times a day. When you see the first teeth appearing, you should try and clean those at least one time each day. You can do this at bedtime with a soft bristle toothbrush which is suitable for toddlers.
One to three years old
This is the time where you will encounter your child’s first visit to the dentist. During this visit, you will have to adhere to whole new set of rules. In addition, in children between these ages, you need to check their mouths for indications of decay at least once every month. You can do this by lifting your little one’s lip and searching for distinctly different white or brown spots on the teeth or in the gum line. If you find such spots, taking your child to the dentist ASAP is the right thing to do.
Three to four years old
When your child is within these ages, it’s probably time to teach him the “2 for 2” program. In this, you will have to teach him to brush his teeth two times a day for 2 minutes. At the time of brushing the teeth, let your little one do some brushing as well. But, at the end, you should do it and complete it.
In order to encourage your children to have good brushing habits, you, as the parent, can join him and brush teeth together. This way, you will be setting a good example to your child.
Furthermore, teach your child the correct process of brushing teeth. Teach him to use a small amount of fluoride containing toothpaste and also to spit without swallowing.
