An Interview with Dr. Jose Rios on Breast Augmentation
Dr. Jose Rios is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.
Q. What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is the procedure by which the volume of a woman's breasts is increased with implants.
Q. How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
I beleive preparing for the procedure involves learning about your surgeon, the procedure itself, and the options. It is to your benefit to have some knowledge about breast augmentation before your consultation. Of course, you need to get information from reputable sources as the net can be full of misinformation.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
I perform breast augmentation in the operating room at an accredited outpatient surgery center under general anesthesia for patient comfort. There are a variety of incisions with the most common being inframammary fold (crease beneath the breast), periareolar (at the border of the colored part of the nipple-areola), and axillary (armpit). Patients and surgeons have their preferences. Implants can be placed above or below the muscle depending on the circumstances.
Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
Good candidates for primary breast augmentation are healthy women who have nicely shaped and positioned breasts that are just smaller than they would like.
Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?
I use general anesthesia for my patients, but some surgeons use a combination of local with sedation.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
Any surgical procedure has risks. The most common ones associated with breast augmentation are bleeding, infection, nipple insensitivity, implant malposition, capsular contracture, implant failure. Life threatening risks are uncommon.
Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?
A straightforward breast augmentation will run somewhere between 5700-6900 dollars, depending on the implants chosen. Silicone implants cost more than saline implants (the implants themselves, not the surgeon's fee).
