You have been given an event to plan and you are having second thoughts about it.
You wonder whether the event is going to be a success.
You worry about the event more than you should and wonder if things will go wrong.
If these are some of your thoughts when asked to plan an event, you should rethink your career.
As an event planner your need to be and have the following traits:
Confident
Aggressive
A good communicator
Organizations skills
Emphasis and eye for detail
Perfectionist
Proactive
A problem solver
Multi-task
Excellent time management skills
Creative
Excellent in utilizing finances effectively
Give a high level of services
If you don’t have any of the traits above you may not be cut out to be a good event planner and can never be happy with what you are doing.
If you are an event planner who is unhappy with the job, you may not give your hundred percent to your work, you will feel less confident and de-motivated. You will eventually not be able to deliver what the clients wants; this will make you feel like a failure.
If you feel that you are obliged to continue as an event planner for some reason, assess yourself, your future and your job should make you happy. If you are not happy with the job you are doing the best advice one can give is quit.
If you are assigned an event, make sure you give it your best. Focus on your job and give it your best effort, put your organization skills to the test, be proactive, give the event hostess some creative ideas, be quick at solving unforeseen problems, deliver on time with a justifiable budget. If you have these skills train yourself to be a good event planner and you are on the right track
On the other hand if you feel that you have given it your all, but deep down you know that you can perform better and felt like you don’t want to this time, maybe the next time you really need to assess your job role. As a tarnished reputation is difficult to fix and you are better off not doing it at all.
There is nothing wrong in accepting defeat and moving on, it is better than staying and spoiling your reputation. As an event planner reputation is vital. You will not get a bad reputation, if you refuse to take on an event because you are not sure whether you can meet their expectations. But you might end up with a bad reputation if you plan an event that is a disaster.
Professionals prefer honest and sincere event planners in comparison to a sweet talking bluff, who can promise but can’t deliver.
