An Interview with Dr. Jay Bowling on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Jay Bowling is a dentist and has answered some common questions bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A.  Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of high quality porcelain custom made and bonded to the front side of the teeth.  Veneers can be used to treat dental conditions such as slightly crooked teeth, discolored teeth, chipped teeth or to cover spaces in between teeth.  The type of veneer used depends upon what type of repair is needed:  esthetics (appearance), functional (chipped or worn teeth), or decay (repairing teeth with cavities).

Q. How long to dental veneers last?

A.  Veneers are an excellent choice for restoring the front surface of teeth to treat slightly crooked teeth, discolored teeth, chipped teeth or to cover spaces in between teeth. The most important factors that determine the lifespan of veneers are:  patient home care, regular dental visits, maintaining a low decay rate, a stable bite relationship, and the material and placement technique of the dentist who placed the veneers. On average, a veneer should last 10-15 years.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A.  Great attention to home care and regular dental visits are typically the only special care needed.  Veneers, although very strong, require at least the same care you would provide for your natural teeth.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A.  Yes.  Every person and every situation is unique.  Sometimes veneers are the best solution, and sometimes they are not.  It is best to discuss your goals and treatment options with your dentist to determine which option is best for you.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A.  Veneers look quite natural.  Veneers are a great option to re-shape, whiten, straighten, and restore a beautiful smile.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A.  Veneers can be placed on teeth where decay has been removed, but veneers do not protect your teeth from decay any more than your original natural teeth.

Q. How much does a veneer cost?

A.  Veneers range in price from $1000-$1500 each.  The price varies depending on the situation and type of veneer needed.

Q. How can we contact Dr. Bowling  if we have further questions?
