An Interview with Dr. Jeffrey M. Canfield on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Jeffrey M. Canfield is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Veneer is a thin wafer of porcelain which is bonded to the tooth to improve its appearance.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. Veneers last as long as furniture.  Poorly made or designed furniture might last a few years, well made and designed furniture with good upkeep can last a lifetime.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. No special care is required, except brushing and flossing every morning and night which are considered normal.  Again, this varies from patient to patient.  Some patients may need special bite guards to keep them from grinding on their veneers at night, some patients may even need extra fluoride treatments.  Dentists usually do not use steel instruments on veneers that will mar them.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Yes.  Depending on the situation, the alternatives are

1)No treatment

2)Braces

3)Tooth colored fillings (Bonding)

4)Cleaning and Whitening

3)Partial dentures or dentures

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. Veneers look natural usually if they are done by someone with extensive cosmetic training and experience.  My recommendations are George Kirtley, DDS on the North Side of Indianapolis, Tim Adams, DDS in Carmel, and Marla Wilson on the South Side of Indianapolis.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. NO.  Brushing, flossing, and fluoride protect a tooth from decay.  Drink sugary beverages at mealtime only, don’t sip on them to help time pass.

Q. How much does veneer cost?

A. Rule of thumb is a thousand dollars a veneer.  Usually done from premolar to premolar, which is the front 12 teeth.  Treatment plans vary, of course, from patient to patient.

Q. How to contact Dr. Canfield, if we have further questions?

A. Call us at Southside Urgent Dental Care: 317-781-3900.
