An Interview with Dr. Robert E. Hindman on Periodontal Disease

Dr. Robert E. Hindman is a dentist and has answered some common questions bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.

Q.  What is periodontal disease?

A. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an inflammatory and infectious process that causes breakdown and loss of the supporting tissues of teeth:  gums and bone.  Loss of teeth ultimately occurs if periodontal disease is left untreated.

Q.  Who gets periodontal disease?

A. Any adult may get periodontal disease.  People who smoke and people with diabetes are more susceptible.  Occasionally, teens may also have periodontal problems.

Q.  How does one know if I have a gum disease?

A. One of the most common signs of periodontal disease are gums that bleed when brushing teeth or flossing.  Soreness, bad breath, and receding gums are also signs of gum disease.

Q.  How is periodontal disease detected?

A. Periodontal disease is usually detected by an examination of the gums and from xrays.

Q.  How is periodontal disease treated?

A. Treatments vary from non-surgical to surgical procedures that are done in the office.  Many procedures are now done using a specialized laser.

Q.  Why does one need to see the hygienist regularly?

A. Seeing a hygienist helps control the bacteria that can cause periodontal disease. Also, regular visits allow problems to be detected at an early stage.

Q.  Will Laser Periodontal Therapy be painful?

A. Laser periodontal therapy is done using local dental anesthetic.  Once anesthetized, there is no discomfort during the procedure.  There is little or no discomfort following the procedure.

Q.  How can we contact Dr. Hindman  if we have further questions?

A. Call:  317-247-9512 or visit our website:  www.West10thDentalGroup.com to ask questions or schedule an evaluation.
