An Interview with Dr. Nancy Halsema on Tooth Whitening

Dr. Nancy Halsema is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tooth Whitening.

Q. What is tooth whitening?

A. Tooth whitening is a process using a hydrogen peroxide derivative to bleach teeth.

Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?

A. Anyone with yellow colored teeth will benefit.

Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?

A. Extremely sensitive teeth and people with uncontrolled gum disease are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening. Also, gray teeth do not bleach well. People with crowns or veneers on their front teeth shouldn’t bleach as these will not change color.

Q. What does tooth whitening involve?

A. There are several different ways to whiten teeth. Over the counter whitening tooth paste and strips are available. Lasers and intense lights can be used. The most common way is with a custom take-home tray in which the bleaching gel is applied.

Q. How long does this take?

A. The tray is worn for about 30 minutes to 2 hours once per day for 1 - 2 weeks.

Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?

A. Custom trays range from $250-350. Pre-made trays are available for as low as $75.

Q. What are the side effects?

A. Temporary side effects can include gum irritation and tooth sensitivity.

Q. How to contact Dr. Halsema if we have further questions?
