An Interview with Dr. Brent J. Barta on Periodontal Disease
Dr. Brent J. Barta is a dentist and has answered some common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.
Q. What causes tooth loss?
A. Decay, periodontal disease (gum disease), or trauma are the main causes of tooth loss.
Q. How do you stop plaque attacks?
A. Brush, floss, and see your dental professional at least twice a year for preventive appointments!
Q. How does plaque attack the gums?
A. Plaque equals bacteria! Bacteria produce chemicals that are toxic and irritating to our tissues.
The irritation is in the form of inflammation. Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are the result.
Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?
A. There is not one answer for everyone, but two thorough brushing a day should be appropriate for most people.
Q. What causes periodontal disease?
A. See the information above for plaque! It’s all about bacteria. The same bacteria in plaque that causes gum irritation and gingivitis will cause periodontal disease and bone loss if left untreated for long enough.
Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?
A. Look for the American Dental Association seal of approval on the tube. If the ADA seal is on the product, then the paste has passed the necessary requirements to be considered safe and effective in preventing dental disease.
For older children and adults, a paste needs to contain a specific amount of fluoride and have a specific abrasiveness to clean the teeth without being too harsh.
For younger children who cannot rinse and spit out, use a pediatric paste without fluoride.
For any child under the age of four, monitor the use of toothpaste to prevent accidental swallowing of large amounts.
Be cautious in using pastes with special features such as whitening or tarter control. These pastes are not for everyone. Let your dentist or hygienist help you select the correct features for your paste!
