| What Is Endodontic (Root Canal) Treatment? Huntsville |
The word Endodontics comes from the Greek words “endo," which means inside and “odons” which means tooth. Endodontics or “root canal” treatment is a relatively new type of treatment for teeth with diseased or injured roots. The root refers to the tooth pulp (which contains the nerves, venules, arterioles, lymphatic and fibrous tissue) which can become diseased or injured. Subsequent to the disease or injury, without treatment the pulp tissue dies. If the dead tissue is not removed the tooth will also decay and require removal. Endodontic treatment will help to save the tooth while cleaning out the diseased or injured tooth pulp, at this time.
The pulp provides protection to the nerve and helps with providing nutrients to the tooth as well. Winding through the tooth like a thread it extends from the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws to the crown of the tooth. An infected tooth will cause tooth decay. Subsequently the injured or damaged pulp due to the inability to repair itself will die. Among reasons for the pulp death is a deep cavity or a cracked tooth. Due to these problems bacteria or germs enter the pulp. This is how an infection is caused inside the tooth. Without treatment the bacteria builds up and there will be pus at the tip of the root in the jaw area. This pus pocket is referred to as an abscess. These abscesses cause damage to the area around the teeth, mainly the bone.
The dentist will first find out the cause of the damage to the tooth’s soft core (or pulp). Due to the infection there may be swelling. In this instance the dentist will prescribe antibiotics to defuse the infection and thereby reduce the swelling. The procedure may take two to three visits to the dentist. Finally the dentist will remove the pulp and clean the pulp chamber and the root canals of the tooth and then seal them. This procedure is knows as endodontic treatment or commonly known as root canal treatment.
Endodontics or root canal treatment is a procedure that helps to save the tooth and get rid of diseased or damaged pulp tissue. There after the canal is cleaned and sealed off and protected. Subsequently a crown is placed over the tooth to make it firm and secure. This will ensure the tooth is stronger and will not be prone to further damage.
