| Dr. Robert Tamayo is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Contact Lenses.
Q. What’s involved in Contact Lens Fitting?
A. Contact lens fitting involves a patient prescription and measuring their corneal curvature, so we can prescribe the best contact lens curvature to fit the cornea. You want a good fitting contact, so the eye can receive enough oxygen and feel comfortable.
Q. What types of Contact Lenses are there?
A. There are different types of contacts for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and bifocals/multifocal. Patients can also be fitted with certain types of contacts for dry eyes and allergies. There are also colored contacts and contacts you can sleep in.
Q. Can children wear Contact Lenses?
A. Most patients can be fitted as young as 12 yrs old, but I have fitted contacts as young as 9yrs old, depending how mature, responsible, and how it can improve their quality of life.
Q. What is the difference between soft and hard Contact Lenses?
A. The difference between hard and soft contacts: Hard contacts, also known as Rigid gas permeable, are made a stiff plastic. It takes about 2 to 4 weeks for the eye to adapt and feel comfortable, but it does provide crisp vision. Soft lenses are made of very soft plastic, and it only takes 1 to 2 days to feel comfortable. Soft contacts come in daily disposables, 2 week disposable and monthly disposables.
