An Interview with Dr. James F. Boynton on Breast Augmentation

Dr. James F. Boynton is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.

Q. What is breast augmentation?

A. Breast augmentation is defined as enhancement of breast size and/or shape and it is usually achieved using an implant inserted behind the gland or behind the muscle (the pectoralis muscle).

Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?

A. The procedure begins with consultation with the patient to determine implant type, size and shape.  Then, in the OR, I make a small incision at the infra-mammary crease as an access point to insert the implant.  I prefer to place the implant behind the muscle or in some cases a "dual plane" procedure.  After I am satisfied with the implants position it takes just a few stitches to close the incision and we’re done.  It takes about an hour, and patients are able to go home an hour after surgery.

Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

A. Most patients are good candidates for this procedure but I think the best time to consider it is after having children, after changes have occurred to the breast.

Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?

A. These procedures are performed under general anesthesia by a board certified anesthesiologist at an outpatient surgery center.

Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

A. Risks are minimal--1 in 100 get a hematoma, which is a collection of blood that has to be removed in surgery, and the implant is then replaced.  My risks are about 1 in 200, but in all cases when this has occurred, the patients have done well and maintained their implants with excellent shape and softness. Other possible complications include infection or capsular contraction, both of which very rarely occur in my practice.

Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?

A. Surgery only takes about an hour and patients go home the same day.  Recovery time varies but in general my patients are pain free in 3 days and back to a full routine, excluding vigorous exercise, at 2 weeks.  Patients can usually resume vigorous exercise in 4 weeks.

Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?

A. Cost is between $5,000 and $6,500, depending on whether or not a breast lift is performed in conjunction with the augmentation.  This is a bit more complicated, but it is something I do.

Q. How to contact Dr. Boynton if we have further questions?

A. You may contact my patient coordinator Marinnia Bright at our main number 713-799-9999 or directly at 713-354-5119 to schedule a free aesthetic consultation.
