An Interview with Dr. Robert Peterson on Facelift.

Dr. Robert Peterson is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Facelift.

Q.    What is a facelift?

A.    Facelift is a broad term that describes a variety of different surgical procedures.  Traditionally, in the U.S., this surgery focused on tightening lax skin in the lower face and neck, whereas in Asia the term was used for surgery to lift the upper face and brow region.  To add to the confusion, over the past decade, a variety of face-lifting techniques have been developed that address the midface.  The procedures involved can range from a simple "skin tuck" with quick recovery (but limited longevity) to a more complex tightening of multiple layers of the face with removal or repositioning of face and muscle tissues.  We are happy to work with you to select the technique which best suits your goals, budget, and timetable (and anatomy!).

Q.    What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?

A.    A youthful well rested look without being over done can do wonders for your self esteem.

Q.    Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

A.    Yes, like all surgery there are risks like infection, scarring, skin loss, nerve damage, etc.  Fortunately, major problems are uncommon.

Q.    Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?

A.    No.  Time marches on and gravity works 24/7.  These same forces that led to aging of your younger skin will happen again.

Q.    Is there a common technique for facelift procedures?

A.    No.  There are many different facelift techniques, because everyone is different.  People vary in their bony anatomy, degree of skin laxity, amount of fat in the face, and other structures.  In addition, they have different goals and amount of time that they can devote to recovery.   Because of this need to tailor the facelift to the patient, there are many different kinds of facelift.

Q.    Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?

A.    It is possible but not necessary to perform a facelift under general anesthesia.  A safer and more common choice is to use local anesthesia with some sedation.

Q.    How long after facelift can I resume normal activities?

A.    Recovery from a "mini-lift" is very quick – just a few days.  A more complex facelift will have more swelling and bruising, which can take 2 weeks to resolve.  Normal sedentary daily activities can be resumed in a day or two but vigorous exercise should usually be avoided for a few weeks.
