About This Article: The Basics in Making a Computer Game

Making computer games is a fun career path for those who know about animation and the technical attributes of creating computer games.

The basics in making a computer game

Computer games have come a very long and hard way since the first computer games started coming out. The first computer games were developed for mainframe computers in the early 1980's. These games were not as fancy as the games which are available in the market now, but they did what they were designed to do, which was to entertain.

Computer games started to boost as an industry only after the introduction of home or personal computers. Software companies quickly grabbed the opportunity and started to develop computer games for home owners of personal computers. The rapid development of computer games was boosted yet again after the introduction of Windows 95 and then later on Windows 98. These GUI (Graphical User Interface) platforms helped to develop games which had more quality and class.

Developing a computer game is no joke. It took a lot of dedication, talent and a lot of man power to build and finish a computer game and it still takes the same amount or even more dedication and talent to complete a computer game. Computer games are built using languages like C and C++. It might sound easy, but it is tiring work. First the developers need to have a "game plan" on how and what they want to develop. Once the plan is set the developers can start some of the coding of the game. Then the animators and artists have to start developing the scenes, characters, sceneries and other visual interfaces of the games. Then the developers can go ahead and do the rest of the coding of the game linking the characters and the sceneries.

The tricky part is developing the AI or the artificial intelligence part of the game. Not every move that the gamer is going to make can be preprogrammed. What the developer can do is to create a free moving area which is restricted to a certain area. Once the area is defined the game needs to be developed in such away that the game will respond in different ways when the gamer is trying different things.

Once all the coding and animation is done then the game must be tested for bugs. This is yet again a great challenge, because the game might work well in one mode or in one way, but the game might not work if the user tries something different. So all these need to be tested and re-tested as much as possible before the game is launched.

Creating and developing a game is not easy, but after all the hard work, dedication and effort to know and see the end result is nothing short of amazing is enough of a reward for the developers. The more effort the developers put in the better the outcome of the game. Many users just play the game without much appreciation to the developers of the game, which would be a crime in it self because they sacrificed their time and skill so that you may have the time of your life.
