Sickness and Health

We only truly realize the value of being in good health when we are under the weather. How many times have we lain in bed blowing our noses and wishing that we had taken a bit more care-only to forget all those good intentions once we are back on our feet?

There are billions of germs around us and on our bodies that it should be easy to get sick. Fortunately, our body has a few effective defences up its sleeve, starting from the skin. All we need to do it make sure those protective components are maintained well. Regular cleaning is a must. We need to eat the right food and drink lots of water. Sometimes, we need vaccines- which are usually disabled or non-virulent forms of pathogens- to keep diseases at bay.

Here we share some tips to stay healthy and disease-free.

1) Hygiene – This is nothing new but it still deserves mention at the outset. Germs are everywhere and it takes little to incite them into attacking you. Use a good disinfectant at home, especially in the bathrooms. Wash your hands thoroughly after your chores and after handling pets. Vigorous washing is also important in the kitchen, when you cook meals.

2) Eat well- Fast food and processed food trouble your digestive system. It hampers your immune functions too. Only by eating fresh vegetables and fruits will you support the fight against bacterial and viral infection. Food has a direct impact on curing an illness and its symptoms.

3) Get enough rest- When you don’t give your body the respect it deserves, it can double back on you. Fatigue will slowly affect your immune system, until you have no energy to ward off germs. Sleep deprivation can mess up your biological clock. If you are infected by viruses, there is no medicine out there that can cure you fully but rest and fluids will promptly aid your recovery.

4) Limit prescription drugs – The easiest thing to do when you are sick is to channel a doctor. Although they are the experts, they are not perfect. Sometimes, prescribed drugs cause some damage to the system, whether in the form of side effects or worse. Drugs should not be an easy way out but a last resort. It’s sad to see how some people get addicted to drugs and painkillers and never let their bodies heal naturally. If you push too far, gradually the body can lose this ability altogether.

5) Keep a healthy distance- The cold and the flu are among those annoying afflictions that are easily transmitted. Make an effort to stay away from those who sneeze and cough away or at least limit exposure. You’ll be glad you did.

6) Bundle up during cold weather- Even the winter lovers need to heed this tip. Love the cold or not, we all are susceptible to infections in one-digit temperatures. Drink warm soup or a warm beverage after a chilly night out and don’t let your body freeze up
