Do you need a trainer?
If you are reading this, you would have already thought of investing in a personal trainer but it doesn’t hurt to know why people usually make this decision. Working out on your own has its advantages. At the same time, it’s so easy to get bored. People tend to start out with great enthusiasm and resolve but forget to mix things up as they go along. Sadly, many don’t break out of the same old repertoire of pushups and jumping jacks. When it comes to motivation and variation, a personal trainer can set the record straight.
Working out is about knowing your fitness level and training the body to maintain it or be better. Fitness trainers are well trained in this regard. They can come up with a fitness program that is right for you. That itself can stimulate you to get good results.
Before you hire...
As with everything, you must get your money’s worth. Your fitness trainer can be evaluated by his experience, qualifications and not forgetting the personality. Remember, the objective is to work out and to have fun with it. Make an appointment for an interview with prospective trainers and base your questions on the following:
1) Experience- It’s not just about the number of years but also about the type of experience. If the trainer has worked with a wide range of people, it’s a good sign. But ask whether he/she has experience working with people of your age, your fitness level and the type of training you want. Don’t limit yourself to asking the trainer about training experience; ask around at the club he/she is attached to. The popular ones will surely be talked about.
2) Accreditation- Do you see professional credentials obtained through a highly regarded fitness association, like the ACSM, ACR or NSCA? CPR certification comes with that territory but check for it anyway. Further education in health related areas is a plus.
3) Character - The trainer should be a strong motivator and very attentive to your needs. You should be able to get along on a comfortable level with that person, as you two will be working closely for about 3 months or more. Ask yourself whether you prefer to train with a person of your gender or otherwise.
4) Flexibility- No amount of qualifications or experience will help if your workouts hours are not compatible with the trainer’s. Sometimes, choosing the trainer in very high demand may not be the best option, because you might be competing for his/her time. Don’t forget to ask how early you must inform the trainer to cancel a workout.
5) Fees- The fees should be reasonable and based on the type of training you need. You have to find out the current going rate in your area. Check whether there are any penalties for canceling a workout. If you agree to a package, make sure the same trainer is involved throughout the program. Sometimes, a free trial session can be arranged.
