How to Choose a Good Gym

Working out is more fun when you get the chance to socialize. But a gym that is not the perfect fit for you can make you neglect exercise and grow wary of working out altogether. Here are a few tips to make your gym outings more rewarding.

01. Equipment to suit your workout?
Before we go in search of a gym, we should know what type of exercise we need. Do we need to focus mainly on the torso area or the calves and thighs? Do we need to lift weight or do a calorie burning, high energy routine? Sometimes a gym that is small may not have enough space to hold extensive aerobics classes. Check any information leaflets or directly contact the manager of the gym to make sure you don’t join a gym that doesn’t cater to your needs.

02. Availability of instructors
The presence of instructors is very important, especially if you are a novice at this. They can size up your fitness level and advice you on what to do to lose weight or tone the body. If only one instructor is available at a given time, you might be left to yourself to figure things out.

03. Is it overcrowded?
On the one hand, a large number of clients can be a good thing, meaning that there is demand for that particular gym. But, the truth is, too much activity can distract you from exercising. It can interrupt your concentration. To push yourself physically, you will need some private space, so best to look for it.

04. Location, flexibility of opening hours and membership terms
Let me tell you about my good friend. She likes to exercise in the morning, before going off to work. It takes half an hour from her home to the gym. To be at the office by 8.30 a.m. and to get a workout of at least 1 and half hours, she needs to set off from home by 6.00 a.m. For others, it might mean going to the gym earlier. We are all very busy people these days, so convenience is of utmost importance.

Some gyms offer are a low fee membership for part-time members (like my friend who uses the gym only in the mornings, on some days) as opposed to full time members. You should be able to freeze your membership if you are going out of the state or country or are unavailable for some other reason for a long period of time. This way, your money will not be wasted.

05. General cleanliness and proper maintenance of equipment
A gym may have all the latest gadgets but if it’s not looked after properly, what’s the use. Cleanliness can’t be overlooked, especially with regard to changing rooms and showers. Make sure to visit the gym before opting for a membership. You need to be comfortable with the setting to become a regular visitor and to make exercise a wholly pleasant experience.
