An Interview with Dr. Michael K. Hwang on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Michael K. Hwang is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q.  What are porcelain veneers?

A. Veneers are thin "contact lens" coverings on the front of our teeth that can dramatically improve both the shape and color of our natural teeth.

Q.  How long do dental veneers last?

A. Typically 5-10 years

Q.  Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Oral hygiene is most important-the cleaner you keep your veneers, the longer they will last. Regular visits to your dentist for 6 month cleanings will also help veneers last longer. In addition, because porcelain is not as hard as enamel, I recommend patients with veneers not to bite directly into hard foods such as apples or hard bread on their veneered teeth.

Q.  Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Yes. Because veneers are only cosmestic, they are usually not needed for health reasons and are always optional. Other cosmetic options include whitening and bonding. Whitening changes only the color and not the shape of teeth. Bonding is applying composite resin(plastic filling material) to teeth, but it does not last as long or look as nice as veneers.

Q.  Do veneers look natural?

A. Yes, they look natural. They often look better than our natural teeth.

Q.  Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. Veneers do not provide any protection from decay-they are cosmetic, not protective.

Q.  How much does veneer cost?

A. Our standard fee for veneers is $1100 each, but we typically offer discounts for patients who pay in full before treatment is started and also for patients who send us referrals.

Q.  How to contact Dr. Hwang if we have further questions?

A. Please send an e-mail to michaelhwang99@hotmail.com.
