An Interview with Dr. Becky Coats on Periodontal Diseases

Dr. Becky Coats is a dentist  who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Diseases.

Q. What Causes Tooth Loss?

A. Gum disease, lack of dental care and cleanings, not flossing, clenching and grinding, dental decay, trauma

Q. What Causes Periodontal Diseases?

A. Poor home care, diabetes, not flossing, missing dental cleanings, poor diet

Q. Can Periodontal Diseases Be Prevented?

A. YES!  By gum therapy for treating periodontal disease

Q. How Does Plaque Attack the Gums?

A. Plaque left on the teeth can cause tooth cavities. Plaque left around the gums and not being removed can cause an inflammatory response that can cause bleeding gums, swelling and or gum recession, as well as bone can recede and result in loose and sensitive teeth.

Q. How Do You Stop Plaque Attacks?

A. Brushing and flossing will stop plaque. I would recommend twice a year dental cleanings as well and a fluoride treatment for all ages. The best toothbrushes are electric ones such as Sonicare and Oral B. The amount of plaque that is removed is far greater than our regular manual toothbrushes. The timer of 2 minutes is also a great function of electric brushes so that we do not cheat ourselves on our time to our dental brushing. Most people brush for less than 20 seconds.

Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?

A. Minimum of twice a day. However, I would recommend brushing after each meal. Flossing is important as well as this  hygiene measure can help prevent periodontal disease, as well as cavities between the teeth.

Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?

A. ADA approved and with Fluoride. Please watch out for organic toothpastes advertised because some of the  cleaning agents are not great for plaque removal and some do not have fluoride in them that prevent cavities.

Q. How to contact Dr. Coats  if we have further questions?

A. Email : drcoats@grapevine-dentist.com or call the office at 817-488-2288
