An Interview with Dr. Stephen L. Johnson on Periodontal Disease
Dr. Stephen L. Johnson is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.
Q. What Causes Tooth Loss?
A. Tooth loss can be caused by dental caries (decay), periodontal disease, trauma, or fractured teeth. All but trauma can be avoided and prevented, and we take pride in getting our patients to a point where they are without dental problems.
Q. What Causes Periodontal Diseases?
A. Dental plaque which causes tooth decay and gum disease is the accumulation of bacteria that organizes on the tooth surface above and below the gums.
Q. Can Periodontal Diseases Be Prevented?
A. Removing plaque prevents most dental problems, and it’s the mechanical destruction of the plaque with a toothbrush or floss that allows it’s removal.
Q. How Does Plaque Attack the Gums?
A. Plaque attacks the tooth surface from above and below the gum line.
Q. How Do You Stop Plaque Attacks?
A. I take 24 hours for plaque to accumulate and with perfect brushing and flossing someone could only brush once a day.
Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?
A. As most of us are not perfect brushers or flossers we recommend twice a day.
Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?
A. You can do an excellent job of brushing without toothpaste, however most toothpaste contains fluoride, which is beneficial, and most people like the taste and feeling of toothpaste.
Q. How to contact Dr. Johnson if we have further questions?
A. Dr. Johnson can be contacted at (970)241-0110 and at Office@SLJDDS.com.
