An Interview with Dr.Allameh on Porcelain Veneers.

Dr.Allameh is a Dentist and who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. A Porcelain Veneer is a thin covering of the front (visible) part  of a tooth usually constructed of tooth colored material (porcelain) used to restore discolored, damaged, misshapen (too large, too small, etc.) or misaligned (spaced, crowded, etc.) teeth.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. Although it is always my goal to make a restoration last a lifetime, it is simply almost not possible. I’ve seen Veneers last up to decades, and also fail in less than a year. The most important factor in determining the longevity of any restoration, esp a Veneer, is for the dentist to first perform a comprehensive oral examination that should include (but not limited to) studying the patients bite, muscles, joints and any oral habits, prior to presenting the treatment options that may include Veneers. I have a system that I have developed over the years that we use prior to doing a case to try to help with the longevity of Veneers.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. No special maintenance is needed other than excellent oral hygiene each day. Its also very important to keep up with regular dental visits (cleanings, etc.) so my hygienist and I could review the health of the Veneers along with the entire dentition with our guests.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Bonding or tooth colored fillings to fill in gaps or cover stained/discolored teeth (also called Composite Resin Veneeers) are another option. These are not as durable and stain resistant and will require to be replaced sooner than Porcelain Veneers. They also sometimes don’t look as natural as Porcelain Veneers. The only advantage they have would be cost and a single visit appointment (most of the time). The only other option would be Crowns which are a lot more invasive since they require removal of more tooth structure. (If my guests chief concern is discoloration, then sometimes a whitening treatment is a good treatment option. And if its crowding/spacing, Orthodontics could be a wise choice. This is all determined once we do the comprehensive examination mentioned above )

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. The dentists clinical expertise, experience and use of dental products which includes the laboratory mainly dictates the results. Veneers are probably one of the most technique sensitive procedures in my profession. Attention to detail and passion for this work are a must. I see lots of unnatural looking Veneers in the world. My name will be written on my guests smile, so it needs to look fantastic. So to answer your question, yes, Veneers look natural in my practice. But unfortunately, that is not always true with other offices.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. Veneers do not protect teeth from caries/decay. You could still develop decay around the margins of the Veneer (the area where the Porcelain meets the tooth underneath). This is why excellent oral hygiene and regular office visits become crucial.

Q. How much does veneer cost?

A. Using the very best and latest products, attending continuing education courses on a regular basis, having a well qualified office team and utilizing a high end dental laboratory that specializes in fabrication of dental Veneers are answers for a well balanced natural smile. Therefore, the price varies from $1,200 to 1,900 per Veneer. The difficulty of the case dictates the fee since every case is different. The famous saying of ’you get what you pay for’ is definitely a fact when it comes to Veneers.
