Dr. Carly Barrett is a dentist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.
Q. What are dentures?
A. Dentures are prosthetic replacement teeth.
Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?
A. Denture adhesive can help retain the denture during function. Well-fitting dentures should require little to no adhesive.
Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?
A. Semi-precision attachment partial dentures allow the denture to be retained without unsightly metal clasps. Dental labs can personalize tooth size, shape, color, and alignment to make each denture more realistic.
Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?
A. Dentures take at least four visits to complete correctly. If all teeth have already been extracted, the first visit will only take minutes and includes an impression and records. The next visit also takes only minutes. This is when the patient’s bite and measurements are established. The third visit is the wax try in, when the patient gets to try on the dentures and make suggestions for changes before the final dentures are made. The fourth visit is the delivery appointment. Adjustments are made and the patient leaves with new, well-fitting teeth.
Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?
A. Implant supported dentures are one alternative to traditional dentures. The implants help retain the denture.
Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?
A. Poor-fitting or worn out dentures can be uncomfortable. First time denture patients usually experience an adjustment period in which they must re-learn to talk and chew using the new prosthesis.
Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
A. Immediate dentures are delivered at the time when all remaining teeth are extracted. The benefit of immediate dentures is that the patient never has to be without teeth. The disadvantage is that these dentures usually do not fit as well and need much more adjustment as the patient heals from the extractions. Conventional dentures are constructed once all teeth have been extracted and the patient has had time to heal.
