So far, 3 versions of the popular 'Playstation' line of video consoles have been released, the latest being the PS3 on the 11th of November, 2006. Let's have a look at each one of them:
1. Playstation (aka PS, PS1)
This one is the daddy of Playstations, and was in production for nearly 11 years till production was ceased on the 31st of March, 2006. It's a 32 - bit console, and is part of the 5th generation of game consoles. This console, like every single version of Playstations, really set the benchmark for video games during its release time, and, as of the 20th of July, 2008, has sold a whooping 102 million units, and is the first ever video game console to have broken the 100 million sales mark.
2. Playstation 2 (aka PS2)
Released in 2002, a year after the Sega Dreamcast, and a year before the Xbox and the Nintendo Gamecube, the PS2 is part of the 6th generations of game consoles. It is the best - selling console ever, with 140 million units being sold as of the 20th of July, 2008. This was, in part, due to the fact that most of the PS's games were compatible with the PS2. Another reason was the availability of the facility to play DVDs, which gave consumers another reason to purchase the PS2. It is also the fastest console to have sold 100 million units, having done so in 5 years and 9 months.
3. Playstation 3 (aka PS3)
Part of the 7th generation of game consoles, a notable feature of the PS3 is the availability of a unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, which is in contrast to the dependency on game developers for online play, which was the case for the PS2. Another fact worth mentioning is the fact that it is the first Blu-Ray 2.0 compliant Blu-Ray player ever! It comes in 2 versions, a 20 GB, and a 60 GB. As of the 17th of July, 2008, it is in third - place in sales for its generation.
