The all time best computer games

GTA III can easily be given as the title of the 'greatest ever computer game'. Published by Rockstar Games in May 2002, it changed the landscape of video games worldwide, let alone computer games, and became a huge hit through word-of-mouth and widespread critical acclaim. Though the graphics look quite poor when compared to today's games, when it was released, it was host to a huge amount of freedom and precise detail. Yes, it is widely criticized as an extremely violent game, but, the success all came down to the fact that you could keep yourself entertained with a variety of activities, rather than follow a rigid set of levels.

2. Half - life

The sales figure of 8 million across all platforms should very much tell you the story of its success. Developed by Sierra Studios, it was released in November 1998. The game revolves around a theoretical physicist, Dr. Gordon Freeman, who must find his way out of an underground research facility, where experiments and researches into teleportation technology have gone wrong. The novelty of the game lay in the fact that stories are told in the first-person mode, rather than the traditional voice-over stuff. Its first-person shooting also received a lot of praise for the superb weapons and awesome enemies, which presented quite a challenge!

3. Final Fantasy VII

Released by Sony Computer Entertainment, Final Fantasy VII is one of those games that always features on the list of anyone's 'best ever games'. The game is based on the travails of a young mercenary by the name of 'Cloud Strife' (who the player controls), who, along with several others, try to stop the powerful mega-corporation Shinra, which is draining the life off Earth in order to develop an energy source. What really captivates people is the way Cloud interacts with the other characters. The music and the places where you travel during the game also add to the unique experience.

4. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn

Released in September 2000 by BioWare, Baldur's Gate II is widely considered as one of the best RPGs (Role Playing Games) ever released for the PC. The reason for this was that a huge world was designed just for exploring, with a lot of characters with whom you could either start a fight or a romantic relationship, and a simply great story that's epic, and at the same time really touches you personally. Baldur's Gate II takes its place in computer game history as the best ever 2-D game to have been released.
