An Interview with Dr. Paul T. Stallman on Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Paul T. Stallman is a Oculofacial plastic surgeon certified by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Eyelid Surgery.

Q. What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is an excellent way to rejuvenate one' s appearance without having to undergo particularly invasive surgery.  It generally makes one appear more alert, rested and younger.  Well performed lid surgery will not make a person appear as though they had surgery but will provide a very natural look.  Often people feel that with eyelid surgery eyes are less heavy and that they look less tired.  Some may even feel that they see better.

Q. Will blepharoplasty correct my crow's feet?

No, however; other procedures such as minimal incision brow lifting, laser resurfacing and botox may provide significant improvements in this area.

Q. What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Some people actually have some dark pigmentation under the eyes but more often the dark circle is  a shadow caused by fat bulging into the lower lids.  Lower lid surgery can usually improve this significantly.

Q. How long will eyelid surgery results last?

Lid surgery will usually have excellent longevity but patients continue to age and over time show the effects of time, gravity and facial expression. Many years later when people again are starting to notice "sagging", they usually feel that there is still a net improvement.

Q. Will there be scarring?

Upper lid incisions are hidden in the crease of the lid and are extremely well camouflaged.  Lower lid incisions are often completely invisible as they are placed in the inside of the lid.

Q. How long is the recovery?

Generally, people experience a period of temporary swelling and bruising which gradually dissipates over several weeks.  It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under light sedation with local anesthesia, though at times deeper sedation may be used.

Q. What type of surgeon should perform my procedure?

The surgeons most specialized and with the highest level of training in lid surgery are Oculofacial Plastic surgeons.
