An Interview with Dr. Peter W. Cha on Dentures
Dr. Peter W. Cha is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.
Q. What are dentures?
A. They are artificial (plastic) teeth set over an acrylic plastic plate which is molded to fit over the patient’s gums. They are held in by suction, adhesive, or much better yet – implants.
Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?
A. If one has a loose fitting denture, an adhesive may secure the denture. A patient’s mouth changes over time and an old denture should be checked every 5 years for proper fit.
Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?
A. Dentures can be made to look very natural. Cosmetic dentures can cost more as there are many different grades of denture teeth available and more effort must be spent using higher artistic quality labs to fabricate a set of cosmetic dentures.
Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?
A. 4 – 6 weeks
Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?
A. Standards dentures using standard grade teeth and basic generic teeth arrangements.
Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?
A. The comfort of a denture is dependant on the shape of the patient’s gums on which the dentures will sit and the patient’s natural tolerance and adaptiveness.
Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
A. A patient who already has their teeth missing for a time will benefit from conventional standard or cosmetic dentures. A patient who currently has some teeth that are not going to be saved may be pre-fitted for immediate dentures and have the dentures adjusted and delivered on the day of the removal of their remaining teeth. This saves the patient from going without teeth. Once complete healing has occurred, they will need a reline for the immediate dentures to fit the patient’s newly healed mouth.
Q. How to contact Dr. Cha if we have further questions?
