1. Tell us about the start of Senior Magazine Inc?

I founded and published my first magazine, Denton County Texas Senior Resource Guide (now known as Denton County SENIOR), in the spring of 2006. It was met with instant success, being well received by readers, advertisers and hospitals alike. Since that first publication, three additional regional publications have been added; Collin County SENIOR Magazine, Texoma Area SENIOR Magazine and the most recent, Colorado Springs SENIOR Magazine. Based on the overwhelming success of the four markets we have developed, we are now offering our system to others through franchising in order to bring SENIOR Magazine into new markets.

2. What inspired you to start this business?

My dedication and involvement with the senior healthcare field dates back to 1997 when I co-founded a personal care agency, Unlimited Care of North Texas. This company specialized in 24-hour live-in care for seniors. After 8 years of providing services to seniors, I discovered that there was an information gap: seniors and their families were in need of a single source of information that focused on their healthcare needs as well as their concerns relating to legal, financial and other issues. I founded and published my first magazine, Denton County Texas Senior Resource Guide (now known as Denton County SENIOR), in the spring of 2006. It was met with instant success, being well received by readers, advertisers and hospitals alike. I spent the next three years working with my Advisory Boards and Reader Review Boards refining various aspects of SENIOR Magazine.

3. What is the secret behind the success of Senior Magazine Inc?

A key to the success of each publication has been identifying the local resources and professionals available to readers, and then accompanying the advertisements with educational and informative articles written by the very professionals who work with that local population. This, along with the advertising and distribution support of major hospitals in each publication’s area, has resulted in meeting a very important need in the communities we serve.

SENIOR Magazines fill a growing need in a growing market. Healthcare is becoming more competitive daily and these businesses need ways to market directly to their consumers. By advertising and writing in our premier, full color SENIOR Magazine, our clients are aligning themselves with an elite company who affectively helps them reach a large quantity of potential clients, at a very affordable price. Our publication is focused and targets a valuable demographic….readers 50 and older with middle to upper incomes.

4. Let us talk about the Senior Magazine Inc Franchise opportunity?

I have been blessed to own my own business since 1997. Our CFO has owned his own business since 1983. At SENIOR Magazine, we never lose sight of the freedom, reward, responsibility, and lifestyle we enjoy as independent business owners. We value our faith and our families above our jobs, and we are proud to be able to share these feelings of priority and accomplishment with others through franchising our system. In this time of economic uncertainty, it is rewarding to know we can impact the lives of so many with this opportunity.

This magazine isn’t simply a job. We realize the full potential of our system and fully believe in the impact this will have in your community. We pride ourselves with how we treat our clients and believe this will be the best decision they can make and their money will be well spent. Understanding why this magazine was started, what it stands for, its history and our plans for the future will help you to become a successful franchisee.

5. Do you believe that yours is a good opportunity for women?

This is a great opportunity for women, whether it’s a stay at home mom who wants a part time work from home job where she can be fully involved in her kids lives by operating a single market, or a career woman who wants to build a full time business with multiple markets in a metropolitan area, women have the knowledge, skills and talents necessary to present themselves professionally and with confidence while working with some of the top professionals in the health care business.

6. In your opinion what is the greatest thing about Senior Magazine Inc?

The opportunity it provides for people to take control of their lives and future while being a true asset to their community.

7. Do you think women can have it all?

I don’t think anyone can have it all. We all, men and women, make choices every day as to how we prioritize our lives. Do we choose working a few more hours so we can get that big screen while missing our son’s little league game? That is why we developed our governing values - the “rules” by which we choose to run our business. We build our business and our relationships according to the value system we call PRIME:

Priorities – God first, family second, job third
Respect – for self, customer & our product
Integrity – mean what you say, follow up & follow through
Moral – personal ethics, self control
Enjoy what you do and how you do it – lifestyle business

We want to enjoy our business and the wonderful lifestyle it provides. By maintaining a positive attitude, and living true to these foundational values, we are able to build a successful, vibrant company, and have fun every step of the way!

8. Your advice to our mom entrepreneurs?

Never put anything above your family and relationships. Do not get caught up in society’s lie that “stuff” will make you happy. You will never look back on your life and wish you had spent less time with your family and friends.

When someone tells you “you can’t do that”, what they are really saying is that they can’t do it. Surround yourself with positive people who will encourage and lift you up, not bring you down.

While we have all heard “failure is not an option”, the truth is failure is a part of growing and learning. Quitting is not an option.
