1. Tell us about the beginning of COMPUTER EXPLORERS (CE).

Karen Marshall, M.Ed, founder of COMPUTER EXPLORERS saw the need for children's technology education programs in childcare and preschool facilities. She started a home-based business in 1984 and began franchising in 1989. In 2003 she sold the franchise to the International Center for Entrepreneurial Development (ICED). ICED has over 900 franchises in 12 countries and CE has additional advantages in the market by utilizing ICED's direct mail program, call center, nationwide marketing programs, etc.

2. What made you decide to go into franchising?

Franchising has allowed CE to become a global leader in children's technology services in more than 3,000 child care centers, preschool and elementary school partner sites worldwide. CE serves students ages 3 to adult and offers consulting solutions, including technology planning for educators and administrators. CE reach extends to such countries as Malaysia, Australia, Canada and the UK.

3. What is the COMPUTER EXPLORERS program all about?

For preschoolers, COMPUTERTOTS programs offer reinforcement of academic readiness skills and cooperative learning using discovery learning techniques and curriculum written by educators. Our Around the World program combines learning about different languages and cultures while using the latest in computer technology! Students are introduced to Spanish, French and Japanese. Our TechStars Program simplifies the complex world of educational technology by connecting science, technology, engineering, math and the arts using project-based, hands-on courses in Robotics, Engineering, programming, video production, etc. CE's Integrated Technology Resource program works with students to integrate technology into core curriculum subjects. CE provides software, lesson plans, projects and the teacher.

4. Let's talk about your franchise opportunity.

CE provides exclusive territory reserved by zip codes and/or county definitions. No prior experience is necessary in education or teaching. Franchisees who purchase a CE business will receive the benefit of: tested programs, trademark recognition, support from experienced management and staff team, comprehensive training, ongoing training via annual conference and seminars, ongoing franchise services support and ongoing curriculum development.

5. Do you believe that women can have it all?

It depends how a women defines "have it all". Our franchise opportunity is a perfect fit for stay at home Moms and corporate women who value the quality of life and looking for a change. They do not need a background in technology or education but need to be someone who is willing to work hard and grow their business which often means involving family and/or friends. My own children loved to help test our software and curriculum. As they became teenagers they would offer suggestions how to make classes interesting and engaging for the students. Many franchisees hire their teenagers as technology assistants in our camp or after school programs. It becomes a family operated business.

6. Is COMPUTER EXPLORERS a great franchise opportunity for women?

Certainly! Its fun and rewarding to market and manage a 21st century business designed to meet the technology needs of children and adult students. Owning a home-based franchise allows a woman to stay connected to her family as she works from home. Franchisees work very closely together through conference calls, seminars, web based forums, etc so a franchisee will not feel alone in their business. The ongoing support of the corporate office is only a phone call or email away.

7. What in your opinion does it take for someone to make it as a COMPUTER EXPLORERS franchisee?

We look for someone who is passionate about providing a quality technology education to children, adults and communities. A franchisee must enjoy networking, sales and marketing to promote their franchise. Organizational skills is a necessity.

8. Your advice to our mompreneurs ...

Find a business or franchise that you are passionate about and willing to work in full time. Networking about what you do should come easy to you and be exciting. Conduct your due diligence on the company and/or franchise to be sure that you have 100% support both in launch, start up and beyond!
