An Interview with Dr. Jonathan Heistein on Breast Augmentation.

Dr. Jonathan Heistein is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.

Q.   What is Breast Augmentation?

A.   Breast augmentation is a wonderful way to regain confidence about yourself and your body. Many women find they cannot fit into all types of clothes or swimwear due to their breast size. These women many times find that a procedure for breast augmentation with breast implants provides the self-confidence boost that they have been seeking. Breast augmentation is performed with the insertion of breast implants to increase the size of the breast, or to replace volume lost following pregnancy or weight loss. After breast augmentation surgery, patients find that they soon can wear all types of clothing styles because their breasts are proportional to the rest of their body. Finally, clothes will fit perfectly!

Q.   Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

A.   Many women with small breasts want to increase their breast size to look better in clothes and to feel more confident.  Also, women's breasts often change in size and shape after pregnancies and these women seek breast augmentation to restore their breast to their former shape. During your private consultation, I can answer any questions you have about breast implants, breast augmentation surgery and recovery and I will carefully listen to your desired results and concerns. This is the best way to ensure your satisfaction.  Anyone without other significant medical problems may be a candidate to have breast augmentation.

Q.   How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?

A.   There is not much you need to do other than to insure that you have been properly informed by your doctor about the options in breast augmentation.  Once you are comfortable that you have made a good decision about the planned procedure, just sit back and enjoy the results!

Q.   How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?

A.In performing breast augmentation surgery, I can make the incision in a number of different ways. There are three common techniques: an incision can be made in the natural breast crease, around the areola (the dark circle surrounding the nipple), or through the armpit. The breast crease incision (also known as an inframammary fold incision) is most commonly used because it has the least amount of complications and heals wonderfully. For most women who undergo surgery to place breast implants, the crease incision is barely visible two years after surgery. I prefer this type of breast augmentation surgery because it allows me to more precisely place breast implants in the desired location for the best possible look.  Almost always, the implants are placed in a precisely created pocket under the chest muscle.

Q.   What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?

A.Most women get back to doing activities in 2-3 days after surgery.  Full release back to strenuous lifting is usually after 2-3 weeks.

Q.   What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

A.The risks are very low but, in addition to the general risks associated with having any surgical procedure, breast augmentation surgery has risks related to the implants.  The implants can leak or can develop a tight surrounding scar.  I usually have a complete discussion of all of the minor risks with my patients during their consultation.

Q.   How much does breast augmentation cost?

A.   The cost is usually about $4200, however this depends on several factors.  An exact price quote is given during your consultation.
