An Interview with Dr. Michael R. Blum on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. Michael R. Blum is a dentist and has answered some of the most common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. The development of advanced techniques has enabled Dr. Blum and our associates to change your smile overnight with porcelain veneers.

Advantages to Porcelain Veneers:
• It’s fast. An entire smile can be changed in just two visits to our Fort Lauderdale office.
• Crooked teeth can be corrected to produce a more perfect smile.
• Gaps between teeth can be easily closed with porcelain veneers.
• Natural teeth weakened by old or broken fillings can now be strengthened by this process.
• The natural tooth structure is preserved and the surrounding soft tissues remain untouched.
• Permanent stains such as those caused by antibiotics administered during childhood can be completely masked.
Lasting longer than bleaching or bonding, Porcelain Veneers have a very high life expectancy. They are resistant to stains and chips, are extremely natural looking, and won’t discolor over time.

Q. What does the porcelain veneer procedure consist of?

A. About half a millimeter, the thickness of a fingernail, is shaved from the front of your tooth. A beautifully sculpted and colored porcelain facing is then placed over your tooth and bonded to the tooth so tightly that it becomes a part of your tooth. The color and shape can be controlled by the laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Blum, to give you a truly beautiful smile. Porcelain veneers are simple and strong, while the results are immediate, dramatic, and long lasting and at the same time, eliminate the need for braces.

Q. How long to dental veneers last?

A. When taken care of, porcelain veneers can last more than 20+ years.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Only regular maintenance and 6-month check-up/cleanings are needed. There is no special care required other than proper hygienic habits.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. Dental veneers cover the face of the tooth while porcelain crowns cover the entire tooth structure.  Other than Veneers, we also offer Lumineers.

The new Lumineers by Cerinate, are extremely thin veneers that can lengthen small teeth, correct misshapen teeth, crooked teeth, crowded teeth, broken teeth and teeth that have been permanently stained with tetracycline antibiotics or age. A Lumineer is a contact-lens-thin porcelain shield that is permanently attached to the front of each tooth that is: safe for sensitive patients because it does not require grinding down large amounts of sensitive tooth structure.

Q. Do veneers look natural?

A. Absolutely. The patient and doctor have control over the shape, size and color of the desired outcome.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. A tooth that is under consideration for a veneer should be in stable health prior to the procedure. Nothing can protect a tooth from decay, even crowns, but through proper procedures the tooth can be brought to complete health, and then covered with veneers, to ensure a healthy smile that will last a very long time.

Q. How much does veneer cost?

A. A veneer can cost between $925 - $1100 each. Here at the Centre for the Dental Arts we are running a special where if five veneers are purchased, the 6th one is free! Call to schedule a convenient appointment for your free consultation.
