An Interview with Dr. Raul J. Rosenthal on Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Raul J. Rosenthal is a Bariatric Surgeon. Here the doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Bariatric Surgery.

Q.      After the surgery, what support will a patient receive in adjusting to new daily habits?

A. All patients that are candidates for bariatric surgery undergo a thorough preoperative work by a multidisciplinary team that entails consultations with nutritionists, psychologists, finance counselors, internal medicine doctors as required and the bariatric surgical team. The same team follows these patients for life. Consultations are required every three months for the first year and on a yearly basis after it.
We have support groups with medical, psychological and nutritional counseling on a weekly basis.

Q.      How long is the recovery period?

A. Depending on the age and medical condition of the patient as well as the type of surgery performed, it might vary between 2 to 4 weeks until the patient can resume normal activities and go back to work. The mortality of bariatric surgery is 0.3%. Safer than driving your car to work every morning. We have conducted at CCF over 5000 bariatric procedures and had in over 10 years only one mortality.

Q.      What types of bariatric surgeries are there?

A. There are different types of Gastric Bypass and different types of surgeries as well. The most popular ones we perform at the CCF are gastric bypass, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and complex re-operations that are referred to us from other centers due to complications or failures.

Q.      Does Bariatric Surgery Typically Lead to Major Weight Loss?

A. Bariatric surgery not only leads to major weight loss, but most importantly to the complete remission of serious medical conditions that are associated with obesity such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Asthma, Hypercholesterolemia, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome, and many more.

Q.      What is the average level of weight loss of each type of surgery?

A. With a gastric bypass patients lose on average 84 % of their excess body weight at 2 years, with sleeve gastrectomy they lose close to 70 % of excess body weight and with adjustable gastric banding 50 % of excess body weight at 2 years.
