A young healthy family with two growing children. Does that sound familiar to you. Well that is quite a family to feed. It seems as if the children are always hungry and want to snack through the day. Prepared snacks are costing so much more that it is almost not affordable. With constant upward changes in food costs and a static income and you are on tight budget. This does not leave many options but to find ways to provide healthy food and snacks to your family and still stay within your family's budget.
Apples are usually the most cost effective. You can usually buy a 3 lb bag for less than $3, or less if they are on sale and in season. Serve sliced apple with a bowl of creamy or crunchy peanut butter for dressing. This is nutritious as well as interesting. If the kids do not like the dressing, just leave sliced apples for them to savor.
Yogurt with fruit is another healthy snack. Yogurt cups and drinks are very expensive but at times they are on sale, and if you have coupons then you can buy even more. Alternately, buy 32 oz. containers of low fat vanilla yogurt for approximately $2.50 or less. Serve with strawberries or sliced fruit that is in season.
The old fashioned snack of cheese and crackers is another option. Cheese is nutritious. Buy 8 oz. chunks of cheese for approximately $1.50 or less if they are on sale, and buy the store brand graham crackers or wheat thins for $1.50 or less per box. At times, you might be able to buy cheese sticks on sale, and that too is a good option and also very nutritious.
Whole grain cereal with milk and sliced fruit is more than a snack, which is very healthy. It is possible to buy the cereal when on sale and use the fruits in season to keep the costs low.
Raisins are a quick snack which most children enjoy eating. Keep them in small containers. Raisins are a highly recommended snack for children. You can buy raisins in 1 lb packs from the whole sale stores to keep your costs low. You can also buy little packs of nuts to give your children as snacks alternately with raisins. It is better to buy them in little packs to retain the freshness.
When providing snacks for your children, it is important, not only to give them snacks that will fill their stomachs but also snacks that will contribute to their good health. |
