Lunch time at school is the favorite time for children, while for those who go to work, it is at times a mere necessity or if you are going to sit with others, a time for socializing.
With food costs rising and with a tight budget to run through the month, it is important to find ways and means to save money for school and work lunch options.
The first thing to check is whether your children are eligible for free or subsidized meals. If it is subsidized, it might be still cheaper than sending the meals from home.
If you are planning to pack lunch to school or to office, the packaging can become expensive. To save money, use the same lunch box to pack lunch and snacks. You do not always have to make separate food to be taken for lunch. If your child likes the food, he or she will be willing to have a snack and keep the leftovers for lunch. Also, sending a juice from home will be cheaper than buying from school.
Find out the guidelines that the school has about bringing lunch items. Be creative and make flower shaped sandwiches or smiley faces inside. Home made lunches are always cheaper than a school lunch but the challenge is to keep a variety of food available for your child. Most children are of the opinion that any food they buy is more interesting than what mom cooks for them, so you have to make it interesting enough for the children to enjoy. Apart from their sandwich, include a few fresh cut fruits, veggies, pretzels, or home made muffins as an additional snack.
Those of us who go to work earn but seem to have to spend more for transportation and food. With so many other priorities one has, the cost of food is an item that has to be curtailed.
More people are now bringing packed lunches from home as cafeteria and food court lunch options can be expensive and not always very healthy. A peanut butter sandwich with a bag of baked chips and an apple is likely to cost around $1.50, and if you want to go for something more substantial and interesting, a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, light mayo, carrot sticks, and canned pears in light syrup and a snack pack of Oreos will cost approximately $3.20. If you want to spend something in between, then a tuna sandwich with light mayo, banana, celery sticks with peanut butter, and a bag of baked chips will cost about $2.00.
It is up to you to decide how much you want to spend for your midday meal, but by any standards the cost is considerably low if the food is made at home.
