An Interview with Dr. Jonathan J. Golab on Dental Implants

Dr. Jonathan J. Golab is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q. What are dental implants?

A. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a periodontist places into your jawbone. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health, who have lost teeth for a variety of reasons.

Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?

A. Dental Implants have become the standard of care to replace missing teeth. Their main benefit is that where they are placed, they prevent bone loss, and do not require grinding down to pegs any adjacent teeth. Bridges do not have these advantages.

Q. How long does an implant last?

A. All factors considered, they should outlast you.

Q. What are implants made of?

A. They are made of titanium. Recently, zirconium has come upon the market, but for zirconium, their "longevity" has not  yet been fully established.

Q. Who is a candidate for implants?

A. The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease.

Q. How are dental implants placed?

A. Dental implants are placed in the jawbone, then allowed to heal for 3-4 months. When they are "integrated" into the jawbone, then a general dentist such as myself then create an "implant crown" that connects to the implant.

Q. How long does it take?

A. For the most part, implants can be completed within 3-4 months to allow for proper healing. However, during the time of healing, you will have a replacement tooth, and will be just fine.
