How To Save Money For Vacation

After facing the pressure cooker environment at work, a vacation is the ideal way to unwind and remember that life does not always have to rush you by. But it’s easier said than done. Even if you manage to get leave for a decent trip, a great holiday comes with a big price tag nowadays.

Ease into your vacation by following a few simple tips:
  1. The journey, they say, is as important as the destination but it’s not worth spending so much on getting from A to B. Check popular travel websites for airline fares, cruises, car rentals and compare prices.

  2. Try to get the phone numbers or e-mail contacts of the hotels/resorts/guest houses you are interested in and contact them with your personal requirements. Sometimes you may get a reduction on the charges advertised on the websites. Plus, familiarity will help when you reach your destination.

  3. Think about whether you can make booking arrangements on your own or rely on a travel agent. If you are going on an exotic holiday or a package tour/cruise, an agent is recommended. Otherwise, it may be more enjoyable to make the booking yourself. With the facilities available these days, it’s easier to be independent.

  4. Usually, agents charge the booking fee per ticket. If you need more than one ticket, perhaps the booking fee can be waived.

  5. If you want to take a cruise, a travel agent who is experienced in this aspect is the best option. He/she can save money and give you value added service.

  6. Book early- early booking specials are offered by cruise operators and airlines. Then again, in places like South Asia, there may be flights which offer very low prices for last minute bookings, simply because they like to fill the seats. Such bargains are hard to find unless you are constantly online checking the relevant sites or have subscribed to special offers announcements.

  7. Consider the timing. The peak season for tourists may not be the best choice. Is it really worth spending extra costs just for the sake of catching the best sun? If off-peak season does not put you and your holiday at risk, then it makes sense to embark on your vacation when others are returning from theirs. It may even give you the peace and quiet you really need.

i.e. some off peak seasons: Winter in Europe (chilly but so less expensive!),       September/ October in the Caribbean, Hawaii in May/September

  8. If you want to save for the vacation, you need to be flexible with your plans. Bringing your travel dates forward or pushing it back by even one day, can make a big change to the thickness of your wallet. Money saved this way can be used for some good old pampering.

  9. When it comes to renting a car for, choose a small, practical ride. A simple car will be easier to handle, especially if you need to shift to right hand driving in the country you are in.

  10.  Sometimes you may be entitled to travel discounts for being a member of a celebrated organization, so check for such possibilities.

  11.  When booking hotels, resorts, try to purchase an all-inclusive package. Not only will this save money, but you will be spared of unpleasant surprises.

  12.  Be a little adventurous and research the area of your interest. Check out the tourist sights and budget each day, if possible. This will help to avoid impulsive (and usually expensive) purchases.

  13. Don’t wait to buy last minute necessities, such as sun hats, sun screen, first aid, bottled water, etc. Buy them before you start off on the journey, so that you are not rushed or not without a choice.
