Fayetteville, the sixth largest city in North Carolina, was originally established by Scottish immigrants in 1762. In the years since, this has become a city of firsts. The city was the first of the more than forty U.S. municipalities named for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who assisted the colonies in the Revolutionary War, and it is the only one he actually visited. The University of North Carolina, America's first state university, opened here in 1789. While a young minor leaguer, the legendary Babe Ruth slugged his first professional home run in Fayetteville in 1914. The historic theme continues downtown, where traditional homes and churches stand alongside Fayetteville's signature icon, Market House. In addition, several museums are devoted to local history, art, and the military. Two of the country's most distinguished military facilities, Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force base, were commissioned here prior to 1920 and remain significant contributors to Fayetteville's economy.
